And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all” (Mark 9:35).

Commentary
Jesus begins with a short and wise message: Those who want to be first must be last. This “last” position is defined as “servant of all.” The word “servant” was used generally of anyone who served as the agent of or at the behest of a superior. The ultimate model of service is Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve and “to give his life as a ransom for many” (10:45). A shocking and countercultural statement both then and now!
