Words Of Wisdom February 9

Memory Verse
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us
run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the
author and finisher of our faith… (Hebrews 12:1–2a).
Words Of Wisdom
In Luke 10:4, Jesus told his disciples to not take anything with them as
they went out to speak on His behalf. They were not to speak to anyone
on the way to their destination either. The idea here is the provision of
God. Just as God had provided for His chosen people for 40 years after
the Exodus from Egypt, He would for provide for those going forth to
proclaim the kingdom. Another lesson in Christ’s words is the importance
of not getting distracted in the work He gives us to do. By refusing to
stop and talk with people on the way to their destinations, the disciples
would avoid getting entangled in situations that may prevent them from
doing what Jesus had asked them to do. In the parables, Jesus
reminded us that many of His followers become unfruitful because of the
“worries of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for
other things” (cf., Mark 4:19). Lay aside the things that prevent you from
serving God and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and His Word!
