Memory Verse
And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery (Matthew 19:9).
Commentary
Jesus’ words about divorce and remarriage in Mark 10:11-12 are parallel to His words in Matthew 19:9 but do not include the words: “except for sexual immorality.” Why? Mark gives the general rule; Matthew supplies the exception. Mark’s purpose was to emphasize God’s ideal for marriage and the seriousness of divorce. Thus, he states the principle in absolute terms, while Matthew includes an important qualification Jesus also gave on
that occasion. Mark’s statement is true as a summary, while Matthew preserves the fuller wording. If I say, “I visited Texas,” and later say, “I visited San Antonio and Austin,” the first statement is not false because it omitted details.
